Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW)
First Nations Climate Change Series
In partnership with DCCEEW, Little Rocket produced a groundbreaking six-part documentary series that places Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and leadership at the centre of climate change conversations.
DCCEEW engaged Little Rocket to support genuine, meaningful representation of First Nations Peoples within the international climate change space. Through a strategic communications approach, the department sought to elevate First Nations perspectives within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), while building awareness, interest and capacity for participation in global climate decision-making.
First Nations communities are among the first to experience climate impacts, despite contributing the least. Yet they have historically been underrepresented in decisions affecting Country and community. For over 65,000 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have cared for this land. Their knowledge, cultural practices and lived experience offer vital guidance for how we respond to the climate crisis – by listening, learning and taking direction from Country.
Little Rocket proposed a documentary series, exploring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ deep relationships with Country and the vital role of cultural knowledge in resilience and adaptation. Rooted in the knowledge that Country is living and interconnected the series unfolds across six episodes – On Country, Fire Country, Water Country, Below Country, Sky Country and Our Country. This approach prioritised diverse representation, featuring voices across Australia’s urban, regional and remote communities, with balance across age, gender and experience.
To support the series, we also developed two animations that distil this message for First Nations audiences. The animations tell the story of how First Nations knowledge holds vital answers to combating climate change. They highlight the recognition by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change of how important this knowledge is and the reason why the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) was established. The animations explain how the LCIPP works and how it uplifts the leadership of First Nations Peoples in global climate action. Together, the animations invite First Nations Peoples to listen, learn and share knowledge with pride, demonstrating how, through the LCIPP, their voices and knowledges continue to shape climate decision-making worldwide.
Filmed across more than 13 locations – from bush to ocean – the series features 14 First Nations leaders and experts speaking for Country in their own words. Through stories of resilience, cultural practice and leadership, the series highlights First Nations Peoples at the frontline of climate action.
More than a documentary, the series is a call to listen, learn and act. It is locally grounded, globally relevant and urgently needed.
The series was screened internationally at COP30 in Brazil in November 2025, presenting a critical First Nations perspective on Australia’s climate future.
For Little Rocket, the project represents its most significant production to date, developed over twelve months in partnership with communities and government to ensure authentic storytelling and respectful representation.
